How to Get Married in Georgia in 2026?
Every year, hundreds of couples from all over the world come to Georgia to get married. The number one reason remains the same: the lack of bureaucratic red tape and the ease of legally registering a marriage. This is especially relevant for couples with citizenships from different countries, and for romantics who want to get married while traveling—without long waits and with minimal paperwork. In 2026, it is still possible to get married in Georgia in just one day.
What You Need to Know to Get Married in GEORGIA
1. Documents Required
If it’s your first marriage: You only need to have your international passports translated into Georgian for the wedding ceremony.
If it’s not your first marriage: You will also need to have your divorce certificate translated into Georgian.
2. Witnesses
You will need two witnesses for your wedding in Georgia.
If friends are traveling with you, their documents can be translated into Georgian, and they can act as your witnesses.
Alternatively, you can have local residents serve as your witnesses.
3. The Process in Tbilisi If you decide to get married in Tbilisi, you must first submit your marriage application. The wedding ceremony can then take place as early as the next day.
4. Weekdays are Cheaper Getting married on a weekday is more affordable. The state fee for a wedding ceremony on a weekday is 135 GEL (~$50), while on weekends (Saturday and Sunday), the fee is 225 GEL (~$85).
5. Registry Office Schedules Civil Registry Offices in Georgia operate on a five-day work week. However, the days off can vary between different offices, so it is important to confirm their schedule in advance.
6. Legalizing Your Marriage This process varies depending on your country of residence:
For couples from Russia: A notarized translation of the Georgian marriage certificate is required. This translation, along with the original certificate, must be submitted to your local registry office back home.
For couples from the EU and other countries: A translation and an Apostille are typically required. The Apostille can be ordered at the Public Service Hall in Tbilisi. Important: You should check with the marriage registration authority in your home country to confirm whether an Apostille is necessary to legalize your marriage.
Wedding in the City of Love: Sighnaghi in 2026
If you are searching for a unique and romantic destination for your wedding, let me introduce you to Sighnaghi. This small, cozy town looks as if it were drawn straight from a postcard.
Located in the heart of the Alazani Valley—Georgia’s famous Kakheti wine region—Sighnaghi holds the reputation of being the “Georgian Las Vegas.” Before the pandemic, you could get married here at any time of day or night. While the regulations have since changed, its fame remains.
According to legend, Sighnaghi is also where the famous love story of the artist Niko Pirosmani took place. He fell in love with an actress and, after selling his home, filled an entire town square with roses just for her. You can see a scene similar to this in the famous movie Love with an Accent (Lyubov s aktsentom), where one of the stories is set right here in the City of Love. I highly recommend watching it before your trip; that way, once you arrive in Sighnaghi, you will recognize its charming streets.
Getting There: The town is a two-hour drive from Tbilisi. You can get there by marshrutka (minibus), taxi, or as part of a guided tour.
